Spooky Love

The story of his life (and especially death) gives all his music an eerie feel. The mystery and "never can know" quality of him is what keeps me coming back. Google Sam Cooke's story.

Mmmm

Good to listen.

CD Found!

Here's the promised playlist from my last post- these are songs that remind me of Blair. Two other things that remind me of her: watching Ally McBeal and reading Roald Dahl. I have done both today!

Until Then...

There is a playlist that I am trying to post of a CD I made many moons ago. There's nothing like finding a mix from when you were fifteen and realizing how much fun it is still to hear it. But until I can find that playlist, here's a yummy morsel... you've got to turn up the volume to hear it.

Friend Playlist

With the warm weather, I can't help but get playlist fever. Last night, Eric Jackson tipped me off to the song, "Aginst the Law in Winston-Salem" covered by Billy Bragg. Now every time I hear that song, I'll remember how he originally told me about it. So, I decided to make a quick list of songs that make me think of certain people (I'm feeling awfully sentimental today). I don't think the majority of these individuals will realize I associate these songs with them, but oh well. Here they are and why:

1. Aginst the Law- Eric Jackson - See above
2. Ball and Chain- Jessie Vogel - A unanimous decision was once made that if Jessie's personality was an instrument, it would be Big Mama Thornton's voice.
3. A-Punk- Bill Brown- Bill's distinct head-bob to this song
4. Shame- Morgan Bennett- Because she told me that there was nothing better than belting this song, and I totally agreed.
5. The Way I Am- Pete and Cameron Dunlap- First dance as a married couple- the two of them dancing to this song made my dreams come true.
6. Na Rua- Susie Lewis- I have no idea why, but the second this song comes on, I think, "Susie."
7. Outside of This Car- Devon Reed- This was one of the songs that played on a night of particularly intense dancing at 1716. I recall an incriminating photograph showing just how white two white girls can dance.
8. Plate Tectonics- Salem Neff- She wanted us to hear them play at The Garage. Commense friendship!
9. Sweet Misery Blues- Andrew Britt- Any time I enjoy a Violent Femmes song, I think of Andrew, because he enjoys them more than anyone I know.
10. Elephant Love Medley- Marissa Hall- Only friends so dear could understand why we love this song so much.
11. Shoop- Stephanie Zyra- Because we spent several hours making up a choreographed dance to this song and then performed it on my 21st birthday.
12. Wishin' and Hopin' - Julie Mischinski - Julie gave me the soundtrack to My Best Friend's Wedding when we were fifteen. It's still in my possession and still reminding me of Julie.

Sister Songs

The other day my sister told me I am her source of memory for her childhood since I was there the whole time, and she can't remember much. That got me thinking about all the freaking songs I associate with growing up with Ellen. From My Fair Lady to Dishwalla to O-Town to Onward, Christian Soldier to Achy, Breaky Heart-- the mulititude of songs overwhelm me. Today I am craving all this music and wishing I could cram it into the ultimate songlist to play all sunny weekend. Anyway, Ellen, and Hannah, because you were there all the time, hope you enjoy!

Trumpet

After watching the Danielson documentary last week, I decided to compile a short list of religious songs that for whatever reason we all seem unoffended by for everyday listening . There's only a couple songs that veer from that category into shameless evangelism, including one song by hardcore Lutherans that's slightly painful to reveal. Ten years after having my teeth corrected by braces, I can't ignore how much I like it.

Feeling Like a Sing-Along Pop Song!

6.5

This is the first playlist I ever made for Andrew in September of 2003. I was subtly trying to convince my country music-loving man how great non-country love songs are.

Happy Birthday, Marissa!

The older the fiddler, the sweeter the tune.
This one's full of high drama and pump-up songs. Be sure to listen to The Beautiful Ones all the way through!
